Sometimes we need a WordPress post ID for a plugin, widget or shortcode we are using. It could be we need another ID, such as a category, tag, page or custom post type. Whatever the case, if you know where to look this is a very simple task. If you don’t know, it’s an annoying chore instead.

We’ve created this video Speed Course to show you how to quickly find the ID of a WordPress post, page, category, tag or custom post type.
Finding a Category ID or Tag ID
In your admin sidebar go to Posts → Categories or Posts → Tags and hover over the name of the category or tag whose ID number you want to find.
At the foot of the browser window you’ll see the URL for the category or tag. In the URL you will see the parameter tag_ID=
followed by a number.
That number is the ID number for the category or tag.
In the above screenshot you’ll see tag_ID=3
, so 3
is the ID number for the ‘Awesome’ category.
Finding a Post ID or Page ID
Go to Posts > All Posts or Pages > All Pages and hover over the name of the post or page whose ID number you want to find.
At the foot of the browser window you’ll see the URL for the post or page. In the URL you will see the parameter post=
followed by a number.
That number is the ID number for the post or page.
In the above screenshot you’ll see post=116
, so 116
is the ID number for the ‘My Journey Begins On a Day’ post.
Helpful Plugins
Go to Plugins → Add New and search for Reveal IDs
.
Install and activate the plugin, and now ID numbers will be listed alongside posts, pages, categories and tags.
